Chapter Twelve

The flames bore down on Trorm’s shield with an almost physical force. An instant later, the elder salamander’s jaws were upon him. Not content to simply try and wear down his shield with fire, the ancient elemental’s fangs sank into the invisible shield, creating strange distortions in the air at the points of impact. Trorm was left staring directing down the monster’s throat from which the flames continued to disgorge.

The force of the attack was such that Trorm was driven into the creature’s mouth and forced to transform his shield from a disc to a sphere to keep from being crushed as he was hefted completely off the ground. He roared his challenge down the salamander’s gullet as it swung him about like a ragdoll, pouring all his energy and concentration into keeping his shield up. As long as he did that, he stayed alive. As long as he stayed alive, the monster’s focus was on him and not his allies.

It was difficult to see through the veritable wall of fire and heat distortion surrounding, but from his new vantage Trorm was able to see that Daniel had made it to Sijat’s side and had pulled the naga shaman free of the magma. She wasn’t moving. Most of the damage seemed to have been done to her tail, which miraculously hadn’t been reduced completely to cinders. The knight finished pouring a healing potion into her mouth, tossed aside the bottle, and grabbed another from his belt and poured it over the severe wounds that covered the lower half of her tail.

The elder salamander thrashed about and Trorm lost sight of his allies as his enemy rag dolled him into the ground. His shield flashed at the impact. The elder salamander didn’t let up. It chewed, burned, and slammed into Trorm’s shield over and over and over and it was all Trorm could do to hold on. He couldn’t keep this up forever.

Bolstered his magical reserves might be, but they weren’t infinite, and they were rapidly depleting. He needed a game changer and quickly went through his roster of spells. None of his divinations spells would help here. There were supposedly some that were supposed to let one see instants ahead of time in the midst of combat but Trorm didn’t have access to them. His restraining spell wouldn’t work either. It wasn’t meant for creatures this size and it was only thanks to Trorm’s own prodigious power that he was able to restrain Israxa with it.

As for offense, his primary spell was meant for multiple opponents and his other attacking spell was a fire bolt. Not especially useful against a being whose very essence was flame. Perhaps his lightning spell could paralyze the salamander long enough for Lilian to deliver a fatal smite? It was all he had so he began preparing…only to realize that it might not be.

He’d been able to easily manipulate his chain lightning spell earlier and had been freely shaping his shield spell. Only a few weeks ago he’d inverted it to contain an explosion.
